$500 Million in Short Positions Liquidated Within Minutes as Bitcoin Surpasses $69,000
Glassnode reported that approximately $500 million in short positions were liquidated within minutes as the Bitcoin price surpassed $69,000, and open interest declined due to forced closures.
In a post made about 5 minutes ago, Glassnode stated that a rapid unwinding of positions occurred in the futures markets as Bitcoin rose above the $69,000 level. The data firm noted that the market was predominantly positioned on the short side during the move.
Short positions opened with the expectation of a price drop began incurring losses as Bitcoin climbed. Positions with insufficient collateral were automatically closed by exchanges, and these transactions are defined as “force-closed,” or mandatory closed positions. This mechanism executes the liquidation without waiting for the investor to manually close their position. The decline in the open interest indicator also reveals that a portion of the futures contracts in the market were closed during this process.
$500 Million Short Liquidation Amid Bitcoin’s Surge
In the chart shared by Glassnode, it is observed that the rapid rise in Bitcoin price and the open interest and liquidation data moved within the same time frame. As the price moved above $69,000 in 10-minute candles, a sharp drop in open interest occurred, and a significant spike in short liquidations is notable.

This scenario demonstrates that liquidation risk for leveraged traders can materialize within minutes. Glassnode’s assessment indicates that the market was heavily concentrated in short positions prior to the surge in question.
