The primary developer of the Cardano ecosystem, Input Output, has announced the start of a new era in which the network’s future will be fully entrusted to the community and external stakeholders. In the final phase of this process, known as the Voltaire era, the network’s most critical technical components will no longer be under the control of a single central entity.

The handover process will begin as of August 2026 and extend through 2027. During this period, core components such as the Haskell node, the Plutus smart contract platform, the Daedalus wallet, and Hydra scaling technology will be handed over to external teams. Notable additions to the development roster include Se7en Labs, which specializes in Solana infrastructure, and Teragone, known for the Mithril protocol.

Full Independence via Three Different Programming Languages

Under the new strategy, Cardano aims to be maintained in at least three different programming languages (Haskell, Rust, and Go). Member organizations such as Intersect and Pragma will conduct official audits, while the entire process will be subject to community voting. Input Output will step back from core development to focus on new research projects through IO Labs and IO Ventures.

However, this technical revolution is unfolding against a complex backdrop due to the network’s weak financial performance. Cardano’s total value locked (TVL) stands at just $70 million, while competitors like Tron and Solana boast volumes exceeding $4 billion. The price of ADA has plummeted 95 percent from its peak, dropping to levels around $0.16. Founder Charles Hoskinson describes this situation as the “growing pains” necessary for the system to mature, stating that failures are essential for building trust.
