Nouriel Roubini, who earned the nickname “Dr. Doom” for predicting the 2008 financial crisis and has harshly criticized cryptocurrencies for years, has entered the tokenization sector in a surprising move. Roubini was among the co-authors of the whitepaper for the tokenized investment product called USAFi, developed by Atlas Capital Team. This step marks the famous economist’s first official venture into the blockchain-based financial world.

USAFi is defined as a tokenized version of the Atlas America Fund (USAF), an exchange-traded fund managed by Roubini and listed on Nasdaq. Planned for launch in the third quarter of the year under the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) framework, this asset provides investors with access to real-world assets such as U.S. Treasury bonds, gold, and real estate via blockchain. Securitize, the project’s infrastructure provider, described this move as Roubini’s most concrete step into the digital assets world.

Traditional Assets Meet Blockchain

While Roubini previously argued that digital assets lacked real value, he views his new project as a shield against inflation and geopolitical risks. The team, which coined the concept of the Technodollar, defines this structure as a new stage following the gold-backed dollar or petrodollar eras. Roubini’s determined and heated stance at financial summits has taken on a different dimension as he now offers a financial solution by personally utilizing the technology he once criticized.

The tokenized asset market, which includes giants like BlackRock and Franklin Templeton, has surpassed the $30 billion mark, excluding stablecoins. Roubini’s move shows that even the most rigid figures in traditional finance are beginning to accept the efficiency and accessibility advantages offered by blockchain technology. This strategy, aiming to create a safe haven for investors, seeks to transform real-world assets into a form usable by digital finance.
