Wikipedia’s Crypto Filter Hits AI Too: Only 67 Altcoins Listed
Wikipedia’s strict editorial policies regarding cryptocurrency projects are creating a serious systemic information gap, causing AI tools like ChatGPT to perceive the industry incompletely and incorrectly.
Wikipedia, the world’s largest digital encyclopedia, continues to maintain its distance from the cryptocurrency world. A new report published by crypto communications firm Chainstory reveals that this situation is not just an encyclopedic matter, but also directly affects the datasets of AI models. It is noteworthy that even billion-dollar projects fail to find a place on the platform, which is considered the internet’s most reliable public record.
According to the report, only 67 of the top 1,000 crypto projects by market capitalization have a Wikipedia page. Even significant infrastructure projects like Sui, which originated from Meta’s digital currency project, and Hyperliquid, which boasts massive trading volumes, are not featured on the platform. The strict filters Wikipedia established in the past to weed out “noisy” and ephemeral projects are today pushing established, billion-dollar industry players out of the system.
The Wikipedia Effect on AI Data
This information gap poses a major problem for tools like ChatGPT, which users are increasingly turning to for information. Data shows that 7.8 percent of the links cited by ChatGPT are based on Wikipedia. This rate is significantly higher than other popular sources like Reddit and Forbes. More strikingly, 36 percent of ChatGPT’s top-tier citations come directly from Wikipedia sources.
Wikipedia often categorizes crypto-focused news sites as “unreliable” and rejects their content. While mainstream media outlets like Reuters and Bloomberg are considered reliable, these platforms rarely touch upon the technical details of the crypto sector. As a result, AI models cannot find sufficient data to fill this gap, and the crypto world is almost ignored in the digital encyclopedia. This situation leads to the misunderstanding of cryptocurrencies by the AI that is shaping the future of the technology world.
