$48 Billion Open Interest in Bitcoin: Decline Could Accelerate at $58,000
While the Bitcoin price is hovering around $63,500, high open interest in futures and declining buy orders increase the risk of a sharp drop if the $58,000 level is retested.
Bitcoin is trading around $63,500, rising approximately 1% since the start of the day, according to CoinDesk data. Although the market appears calm at the moment, the risk accumulating in futures suggests that a potential price movement could be more severe than usual.
According to CoinGlass data, the total open interest in Bitcoin futures has reached $48 billion, while the futures trading volume over the last 24 hours stands at $25 billion. Spot market volume is recorded at only $12.55 billion. While open interest shows the total number of outstanding contracts in the market, volume refers to the contracts traded within a specific period.
Liquidity risk is growing in the Bitcoin futures market
The gap between open interest and trading volume has narrowed to its tightest level since September 2025. This picture shows that the volume of positions held in the market is high compared to the daily transaction flow. In the 2019-2020 period, futures trading volume was approximately 2-3 times the level of open interest.
Glassnode states that long positions are dominant in the current position structure. According to the company’s report, the band of pending buy orders below the price has narrowed by approximately one-third since its peak in early July. This situation means that buyer support, which could meet the price in a downward movement, has decreased.
If the Bitcoin price retests the June low of $58,000, the entry of fewer buyers could accelerate the decline. If forced liquidations of leveraged positions are added to this, a liquidity trap could occur. While a liquidation wave has not occurred yet, investors should monitor the $58,000 level, buy orders, and position closures in the futures market.
