Glassnode Warns of Cheap Bitcoin Volatility: Recent Buyers Failing to Turn a Profit

Glassnode reported that despite Bitcoin volatility appearing at its cheapest levels in years, recent buyers have failed to turn a profit, and the realized move has not covered the premium paid.

Glassnode’s post showed that volatility appearing cheap is not an advantage on its own. While Bitcoin remained calm, option premiums paid with the expectation of sharper moves did not pay off. This picture is not a price direction forecast but rather explains the difference between option pricing and the movement realized in the market. The data indicates not whether Bitcoin will rise or fall, but to what extent movement expectations have been realized.

The chart compares one-week ATM implied volatility with one-week realized volatility. ATM (At-The-Money) refers to options whose strike price is close to Bitcoin’s current price. Although implied volatility is at its lowest levels in years, realized volatility remains even lower. The gap between the two metrics is approaching its highest level in nearly a year.

Cheap volatility in Bitcoin options can be misleading

Implied volatility shows the movement expected by option prices in the future, while realized volatility shows how much Bitcoin has actually moved. An option buyer pays a premium upfront for the expected move. Therefore, when implied volatility remains above realized volatility, it means the movement purchased was not seen in the market. In other words, the volatility premium paid remains higher than the delivered movement, making it difficult for the buyer to reach the break-even point.

Glassnode’s finding that “recent buyers still haven’t made money” is based on this spread. Bitcoin’s calm course made it difficult for option buyers to cover their premiums. The data shows that even if volatility appears cheap, a low realized move can increase the cost for the buyer. The difference does not reveal Bitcoin’s direction, but the divergence between expected and realized movement.
