TRON in brief
TRON (TRX) is the native cryptocurrency of a fast, low-cost blockchain founded by Justin Sun in 2017. The TRON network is especially popular for sending USDT.

TRON is a fast, low-fee blockchain with smart contract support, and TRX is its native cryptocurrency. Founded by Justin Sun in 2017, TRON was first sold as a token on Ethereum before moving to its own mainnet in 2018, the same year it acquired the file-sharing company BitTorrent. Today TRON is best known for stablecoin transfers: a large share of all USDT in circulation lives on TRON as a TRC-20 token.
How does TRON work?
TRON uses delegated proof-of-stake (DPoS), a variant of proof-of-stake. TRX holders vote, and the 27 candidates with the most votes become “Super Representatives” who produce blocks. A new block is created roughly every three seconds. Because TRON’s virtual machine (TVM) is largely compatible with Ethereum’s, smart contracts written for Ethereum can be ported to TRON with relatively little effort.
What are bandwidth and energy?
On TRON, the cost of a transaction is measured in two resources rather than directly in TRX. Bandwidth covers the data size of a transaction; every account gets a small free allowance each day, so simple TRX transfers are often free. Energy is needed to run smart contracts. Sending TRC-20 USDT is a contract call, so it consumes energy.
If you don’t have enough of either resource, TRX is burned to cover the shortfall. That is why holding only USDT in your wallet is not enough; you also need some TRX to send it. The alternative is to stake TRX to obtain bandwidth or energy.
Some platforms also rent out energy for short periods, which can be cheaper than burning TRX on every transaction for people who send USDT often. TRON addresses start with the letter “T” and look different from Ethereum’s 0x addresses.
What is TRX used for?
- Fees: when resources run short, the cost is paid by burning TRX.
- Staking and voting: staked TRX provides energy or bandwidth plus voting power; voting for Super Representatives can earn rewards. Unstaking involves a waiting period of about 14 days.
- Stablecoin transfers: TRON’s low costs make it a common choice for moving USDT between exchanges.
- DeFi: TRX is a base asset in lending and swap applications on TRON.
How does TRX supply change?
TRX has no fixed maximum supply. New TRX is minted with every block as rewards for Super Representatives and voters. At the same time, fees paid when users lack resources are burned. When network activity is high, the amount burned can exceed new issuance, and TRX supply shrinks. Supply changes therefore depend heavily on how much the network is used, particularly for USDT traffic.
What are the risks of TRON?
Concentrating block production in 27 Super Representatives draws criticism that the network is centralised, and large TRX holders can heavily influence the vote. Dependence on founder Justin Sun and affiliated companies creates reputational and regulatory risk: in March 2023, the US Securities and Exchange Commission sued Sun and TRON-linked entities. Investigators also report that TRON-based USDT is frequently used to move illicit funds, which leads to addresses being frozen from time to time. Choosing the right network is essential: TRC-20 USDT must only be sent to a TRON address.
How to read TRX market data
Because TRX has no maximum supply, it is worth checking whether circulating supply is moving because of burns or new issuance. To gauge real network usage, you can follow the amount of stablecoins on TRON and daily transaction counts alongside TRX trading volume, though these figures do not map one-to-one onto the TRX price.
