Bitcoin Cash in brief

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency that split from Bitcoin in a 2017 hard fork to pursue cheap, fast payments through larger blocks. Like Bitcoin, its supply is capped at 21 million coins.

Safety note: download wallets and apps only from the official site, and beware of unsolicited "support" accounts and fake airdrop sites.

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a cryptocurrency that split from the Bitcoin network in a hard fork on August 1, 2017, and has run on its own chain ever since. Its goal is to deliver Bitcoin’s original “peer-to-peer electronic cash” vision through larger blocks, keeping payments cheap and fast. Everyone who held BTC at the moment of the split received the same amount of BCH; since then, the two networks have had separate transaction histories, miners and prices.

Why was Bitcoin Cash created?

Between 2015 and 2017, the Bitcoin community argued over how to handle growing transaction demand. One camp favoured SegWit and second-layer solutions; the other wanted to raise the block size directly. Shortly before SegWit activated, big-block supporters launched Bitcoin Cash with an 8 MB block limit, which was raised to 32 MB in May 2018.

The network split again later. Bitcoin SV (BSV) broke away in November 2018, and the chain now known as eCash (XEC) followed in November 2020. Any asset with “Bitcoin” in its name is therefore a separate network that deserves its own assessment.

How does Bitcoin Cash work?

BCH is a proof-of-work network that uses the same SHA-256 algorithm as Bitcoin, so the same mining hardware can work on either chain. Blocks arrive roughly every 10 minutes, and balances follow Bitcoin’s UTXO model. Since November 2020, the ASERT difficulty adjustment has helped keep block times steady when miners move between the two networks.

Unlike Bitcoin, BCH has neither SegWit nor Replace-by-Fee (RBF). The aim is to make unconfirmed transactions harder to alter, which supports fast acceptance of small payments. Addresses use the CashAddr format with a “bitcoincash:” prefix, introduced because the legacy format looked almost identical to BTC addresses.

What is BCH used for?

BCH is mainly used for everyday payments, small transfers and micropayments. Because block capacity is generous, fees usually stay very low. Some merchants accept small payments without waiting for a block confirmation, though for larger amounts waiting for at least one confirmation is the safer practice. The CashTokens upgrade of May 2023 made it possible to issue fungible tokens and NFTs on the network. Those tokens are not BCH itself; each depends on its own issuer and rules.

BCH supply and halvings

Bitcoin Cash inherited Bitcoin’s monetary policy unchanged: supply is capped at 21 million BCH and the block reward halves every 210,000 blocks. The most recent halving took place in April 2024, cutting the reward to 3.125 BCH. In May 2024 the network also activated ABLA, an algorithm that adjusts the block size limit automatically based on usage.

What are the risks of Bitcoin Cash?

BCH has far less hash power than Bitcoin, which uses the same algorithm. In theory that makes a 51% attack cheaper, and it is why some exchanges require more confirmations for BCH deposits. Repeated chain splits have also fragmented the community and its developer resources.

The most common user mistake is mixing up networks. Sending BCH to a BTC address, or BTC to a BCH address, can mean lost funds. Before any transfer, check the network and address format the receiving platform expects. Never enter your recovery phrase on a site that promises to help you “claim” coins from an old fork.

How to read the market data

The price and market cap on this page refer to BCH only. Because the two chains shared their history until 2017, BCH’s circulating supply is very close to Bitcoin’s, so the gap between their market caps comes almost entirely from the price difference. When looking at volume, keep in mind that BCH pairs are much thinner than BTC pairs, so large orders can move the price more.
