The EU’s 21st Sanctions Package Against Russia: New Bans Imminent for Cryptocurrency Platforms

As part of the 21st sanctions package prepared against Russia, the European Union has decided to increase financial pressure by expanding restrictions on cryptocurrency platforms.

Representatives of European Union member states have reached an agreement on a new sanctions package targeting the Russian economy. According to information shared by Reuters, with this 21st package, oversight of Russia’s financial system is being raised to the highest level. In particular, the stricter monitoring and restriction of transactions conducted through cryptocurrency platforms are at the center of this new move.

With the new regulations, 94 Russian financial institutions, including banks, and the Moscow Exchange have been included in the full sanctions list. Severe sanctions such as asset freezes, travel bans, and transaction prohibitions will be applied to these institutions. Stating that the Russian economy is going through a sensitive period, the EU aims to further tighten the financial system with this move.

New Obstacles Imminent for Cryptocurrency Transactions

The sanctions package concerns not only the traditional banking sector but also the digital asset world. EU officials have decided to expand transaction bans on cryptocurrency platforms allegedly used by Russia to circumvent sanctions. This step is of critical importance for bringing regional financial traffic under control and further restricting Russia’s access to global markets.

In addition, ships known as Russia’s “shadow fleet” used for oil transportation are being directly targeted for the first time. The oil price cap has been fixed at $44.10 per barrel for 12 months. These comprehensive restrictions aim to narrow both Russia’s energy revenues and its room for maneuver within the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
