Binance Founder CZ’s Altcoin Warning: Actually Controlled by a Small Team
Binance founder CZ praised the technical success and market position of the decentralized derivatives platform Hyperliquid, while arguing that the project is not as decentralized as claimed and is tightly controlled by a small team.
One of the most influential figures in the cryptocurrency world, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), shared significant assessments regarding Hyperliquid, one of the most popular platforms of late, during an interview. CZ acknowledged the project’s success, stating that the platform has created a new market space and demonstrated impressive technical innovation. He specifically pointed out that Hyperliquid has filled a major gap in the sector where giant exchanges like Binance cannot compete due to Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements resulting from legal regulations.
CZ also touched upon the project’s origins, recalling that the platform’s founder, Jeff, had participated in one of his incubation programs in the past. However, the famous figure maintained a rather distant stance regarding the platform’s governance structure. Despite claims that Hyperliquid is fully decentralized, he expressed his belief that the project is actually controlled to a high degree by a small team.
CZ’s Decentralization Criticism of Hyperliquid
CZ emphasized that the platform is not entirely decentralized, pointing to the governance risks of such structures. Drawing from his own life experiences and past legal processes, CZ stated that he would personally never choose a business model where identity verification procedures are not implemented, highlighting the historical risks that this model brings with it.
Assuming the Hyperliquid team is competent in managing their own processes, CZ noted that he did not want to pass a definitive judgment on the project’s decentralization claims, but stated that the current picture points to control by a team. These statements have sparked renewed debate in the cryptocurrency markets regarding the boundaries of the concept of decentralization and the balance between user privacy and oversight.
