Data of 200,000 Customers Stolen at Bits of Gold: Third Breach of the Week
Israel’s largest cryptocurrency broker, Bits of Gold, has announced that the personal information of 200,000 customers was stolen following a cyberattack on a third-party data analytics network.
The Tel Aviv-based company reported in an announcement on Sunday that a hacker gained unauthorized access to a third-party data analytics network. It was stated that the attackers accessed customers’ names, national ID numbers, email, and phone information.
The breach also included IP addresses, bank account information, and public wallet addresses. Bits of Gold announced that it blocked access to the system after detecting the incident and severed the data analytics network’s connection to information sources.
Third crypto data breach in a single week
The Bits of Gold attack marks the third major crypto data breach occurring through third-party service providers within the last week. On Sunday, approximately 40,000 data points belonging to SafePal users were stolen due to a security vulnerability at a service provider. Around 14,000 personal data records of Trezor wallet users were also exposed on August 13 when the company’s logistics partner, ShipMonk, suffered a cyberattack.
Bits of Gold stated that, according to initial investigations, the attack could be part of a broader global incident affecting other companies simultaneously. The company emphasized that funds, private keys, passwords, CVV codes, and scanned ID documents were not affected.
The broker urged its customers to be cautious of suspicious emails, messages, and calls sent on their behalf. It was stated that Bits of Gold will never ask for passwords, verification codes, private keys, or money transfers. The company announced that a comprehensive investigation into the incident is ongoing with the support of cyber incident investigation experts.
