Trump Makes Early Move for ‘Q-Day,’ Believed to Shake Up Cryptocurrencies: Signs 2 Executive Orders

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed two new executive orders mandating federal agencies to transition to post-quantum cryptography by 2031 to counter the threats posed by quantum computers to current encryption systems.

Aiming for global leadership in quantum technologies, the United States has made a strategic move to prepare its cybersecurity infrastructure for the technologies of the future. The new presidential executive orders published by the White House aim to both accelerate quantum innovation and eliminate the disruptive effects of this technology on current security protocols. These new regulations, in which Trump has taken a decisive stance, aim to protect the nation’s digital assets.

The Quantum Threat and the Future of Cryptocurrencies

Executive Order 14409, signed by Trump, requires federal agencies to migrate their high-value assets and critical systems to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards. In this context, strict deadlines have been set until the end of 2030 for key establishment systems and 2031 for digital signatures. The potential of quantum computers to break existing encryption methods poses a significant risk, especially for the cryptocurrency world, which is built on modern cryptography. Data prepared by Coinbase highlights that approximately 7 million Bitcoin (BTC) are held in addresses vulnerable to a potential future quantum attack.

Industry experts predict that quantum computers will render modern encryption completely ineffective and that the breaking point, known as “Q-Day,” could occur as early as 2030. While major networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum are already beginning to develop defense mechanisms against this threat, the U.S. administration is formalizing this transition at the state level. On the other hand, Executive Order 14411 plans for the U.S. to strengthen its quantum supply chain and deploy next-generation quantum sensors by 2028.
