A First for South Korea: Financial Giant Acquires Control of Prominent Crypto Exchange
South Korean financial giant Mirae Asset has taken a massive step into the digital asset world by completing the acquisition process of Korbit, one of the country’s leading cryptocurrency exchanges.
Mirae Asset, one of the most significant players in the South Korean financial market, has officially taken control of the local cryptocurrency exchange Korbit. Mirae Asset Consulting, a subsidiary of Mirae Asset Financial Group, completed all necessary legal procedures to become the exchange’s largest shareholder. This move goes down in history as the first instance of a traditional financial group acquiring a cryptocurrency exchange in South Korea.
The company aims to further increase its current 92.06% stake. According to official announcements, an additional share purchase worth approximately $5.32 million will bring Mirae Asset’s ownership in Korbit to 97.15%. The primary goal of this strategic acquisition was stated as securing future growth momentum through digital assets.
A New Era in the South Korean Cryptocurrency Market
In the active local market, Korbit stands out as the country’s fourth-largest exchange by trading volume. With a daily trading volume of approximately $4.3 million, the exchange remains a key player following the market leader Upbit. It was emphasized that no changes will be made to the exchange’s operational structure, user deposits, or personal data processing following the acquisition.
South Korea’s antitrust watchdog, the Fair Trade Commission, recently approved the takeover. This large-scale merger between traditional finance and the crypto world opens the doors to a new era for cryptocurrency regulation and institutional adoption in the region. With this move, Mirae Asset aims not only to own an exchange but also to become a pioneer in technology-driven financial transformation.
