Brian Armstrong’s ‘AiFi’ Vision Takes Shape: Critical Steps and Industry Commentary
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has shared his “AiFi” vision, where blockchain technology provides a foundational financial infrastructure for AI, while criticizing crypto startups shifting their focus toward artificial intelligence.
The recent artificial intelligence (AI) trend gaining popularity in the cryptocurrency world has drawn a reaction from Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, a titan of the industry. Armstrong characterized the move by many crypto companies to abandon their core focus and pivot toward AI as a “zero-sum scarcity mindset.” According to the prominent executive, crypto is not a field competing with AI; rather, it serves as a general-purpose infrastructure upon which this new technology will be built, much like electricity or the internet.
Armstrong refers to this integration as Agentic Finance (AiFi). To bring this vision to life, Coinbase utilizes its internally developed x402 protocol, the Base blockchain, and the USDC stablecoin. Having opened dedicated accounts for AI agents last June, the exchange recently announced that Coinbase Business users can now receive payments from these autonomous software programs. This system allows digital programs, which cannot open traditional bank accounts, to conduct financial transactions instantly and autonomously.
Machine-Speed Finance in the AI Economy
Other industry representatives are highlighting the technical hurdles facing this vision. io.net CEO Tory Green noted that AI agents need more than just money; they require a “machine-speed” financial system. According to Green, the current financial structure is still human-centric and requires a fundamental overhaul. Meanwhile, NeoSoul AI emphasizes security, arguing that granting direct capital access to code without a history or reputation is risky.
An analysis published by the Wall Street Journal compares the shift in company focus toward AI to the dot-com bubble of the 2000s. Data shows that companies adding popular terms to their names experienced short-term stock surges of over 50 points; however, this reflects market hype rather than structural change. Instead of getting swept up in these passing trends, Coinbase continues to take concrete steps to build the financial backbone of artificial intelligence.
