Glassnode Issues ‘Mechanical Push’ Warning for Bitcoin: The Story Behind $66,900

According to Glassnode’s latest data, the Bitcoin price reaching the $66,900 level is being viewed as a temporary surge resulting from technical closings in derivatives markets rather than an organic buying wave.

While recent volatility in the cryptocurrency market has excited investors, the on-chain analysis platform Glassnode highlights the risks in the background of this rally. Analyses reveal that Bitcoin’s climb to the $66,900 level is not due to sustainable demand but is a “mechanical push” resulting from the covering of short positions and the unwinding of hedging trades. This situation indicates that an environment of overconfidence has formed in the market and that the rise is not based on foundations as solid as it appears.

According to data shared by Glassnode, the delta skew (the price difference in options markets) dropped from the 18% level to plus 1.5% at the peak on July 21. This sharp decline proves that investors no longer feel the need for protection against a potential drop and that a situation referred to as “textbook complacency” is occurring in the market. This extreme optimism, last observed in January, quickly gave way to a pullback after the price was rejected at the short-term holder (STH) cost basis near the $69,000 level.

Overconfidence and Risk Signals in the Bitcoin Market

As seen in the shared charts, the euphoria experienced at the peak of the rally caused downside protection costs to drop to nearly zero. The collapse of protection costs for 1-week and 1-month maturities shows that the market was caught completely unprepared for a possible correction. However, the sharp reaction from the $69,000 resistance reversed this complacency in just a few days, pushing investors to be cautious once again.

These data points emphasize that genuine spot buying support is required for the recovery in Bitcoin (BTC) price to be permanent. Rallies driven by mechanical pushes are usually quickly extinguished by selling pressure encountered at resistance levels. It is of critical importance for investors to closely monitor such imbalances in derivatives markets and open interest data to remain prepared for potential sharp corrections in the market.
