Ethereum’s 43-Day Staking Queue: 2.5 Million ETH Pending, But Demand Isn’t the Only Reason

Thomas Brunner, an official at Sygnum Bank, stated that the 43-day staking queue on the Ethereum network reflects not only new demand but also technical adjustments following the Pectra upgrade.

The entry queue for those wishing to become a validator on the Ethereum network has reached approximately 2.5 million ETH, pushing the waiting time to 43 days. According to Beaconcha.in data, while this density might look like a massive explosion in demand at first glance, experts point out that the situation is more complex than it appears. Thomas Brunner, Head of Custody and Staking at Sygnum Bank, stated that part of this accumulation stems from changes in the network’s technical operations.

Pectra Upgrade and Technical Plumbing Processes

According to Brunner, with the Pectra upgrade, the maximum amount a validator can hold was increased to 2,048 ETH, and an auto-compounding feature was introduced. This causes large operators to “top-up” existing validators instead of opening new ones. Since even every small addition enters the same queue as a new staking request, waiting times are artificially lengthened. Consequently, this picture represents not just new cash inflows, but also the reorganization of existing assets.

Long-Term Loyalty of Institutional Investors

Despite the congestion in the entry queue, the fact that the exit queue is almost completely empty is considered a very positive signal for the market. Brunner emphasized that the fact that almost no one is leaving staking proves investors’ unwavering confidence in Ethereum (ETH). Currently, 41.2 million ETH, equivalent to 33.8 percent of the circulating supply, is locked.

Stating that institutional investors view staking yields as a natural part of the asset despite low prices, Brunner said that the issue of privacy still remains an obstacle. The transparency of all transactions on the network can lead to the exposure of large funds’ strategies. While developments like EIP-8222 are being proposed to solve this problem, question marks regarding capital efficiency remain.
