Wells Fargo’s Major Move Against the Stablecoin Threat: Deposits Are Moving to the Blockchain

By launching tokenized deposit services for its institutional clients, Wells Fargo joins the digital transformation race on Wall Street, following in the footsteps of JPMorgan and Citi.

Banking giant Wells Fargo is preparing to offer tokenized deposit services to select institutional and commercial clients by the end of this year. This move, which will be carried out via its own blockchain infrastructure, will initially enable the seamless 24/7 settlement of transactions between the U.S. dollar and the British pound. With this system, the bank aims to usher in a new era in corporate liquidity management by enabling the transfer and programming of funds every day of the year.

Planned to expand to more countries, clients, and currencies by 2027, this technology will increase the speed and flexibility of transactions. During this process, Wells Fargo will automatically route eligible payments to the tokenized deposit system without changing how clients interact with the bank. The bank has been working on blockchain-based payment systems since 2019 and previously conducted foreign exchange settlement transactions with HSBC using a similar infrastructure.

Tokenized Deposit Defense Against the Stablecoin Threat

Tokenized deposits are based on the principle of representing traditional bank balances on the blockchain. Unlike stablecoin assets, these digital values are considered direct commercial bank money and fall under existing legal deposit protection and insurance coverage. This step by Wells Fargo is seen as a strategic defensive move developed by giant banks wanting to protect their deposit bases against the threat of stablecoins.

The bank had previously revealed its intentions in this field with a trademark application for the name WFUSD in March. Planning to offer conditional payments via smart contracts and establish integrations with other blockchain networks in the future, Wells Fargo is modernizing corporate finance rails. This development proves once again that traditional finance is embracing blockchain technology not just as an alternative, but as a core infrastructure.
