Record Bitcoin Activity Post-Coldcard While Exchanges Stay Empty: Panic Without Selling

Following a security vulnerability in Coldcard hardware wallets, the Bitcoin (BTC) network is seeing record-level activity; however, data reveals this is a migration to secure wallets rather than panic selling.

The cryptocurrency world was shaken by a five-year-old software bug discovered in Coldcard hardware wallets, putting thousands of wallets at risk. While the number of active addresses on the Bitcoin network surged following this breach, there was curiosity about how investors would react. Data shared by Santiment has brought to light the reality behind this massive network activity.

On July 31, as the first transactions took place following the breach, the number of active addresses on the Bitcoin network reached 978,570, exactly 1.6 times the July average. This figure represents a level 43% higher than even the busiest day of the entire month. The activity was not limited to a single-day spike; between August 1 and 6, the daily average of active addresses hovered around 720,000, significantly above the July average of 610,000. During this period, investor sentiment plummeted to -540 on August 1, reaching its most pessimistic point since February.

Seeking a Safe Haven on the Bitcoin Network

Despite this intense network activity, the expected increase in the amount of Bitcoin entering exchanges did not materialize. During the August 1-6 period, daily average inflows to exchanges remained at $1.55 billion, falling below the July average of $1.67 billion. According to research conducted using Santiment MCP and Claude, this situation proves that investors are merely moving their assets to new and secure keys rather than selling them.

Although the panic in the market was real, it did not translate into selling pressure. On the contrary, it is evident that users acted with security awareness, transferring their assets to new wallets rather than exchange order books. This massive migration has allowed the Bitcoin supply to accumulate in stronger hands and provided an opportunity to test the network’s resilience. The fact that there was no rush to exchanges despite record activity once again demonstrates the market’s maturity.
