The End of the Road for Crypto Exchange BitMEX: Why Did $1 Billion Sale Talks Collapse?

After two years of failed sales negotiations, BitMEX has decided to cease operations due to the founders’ obsession with control and shrinking market share.

Once one of the most popular cryptocurrency exchanges, BitMEX is preparing to close its doors after failing to reach a result from two years of sales negotiations. Following a strategic review, the company’s parent organization, HDR Global Trading, announced that it will completely terminate operations on September 23.

While the exchange sat at the table with major platforms like Exodus during the sales process and aimed for a valuation of approximately $1 billion, it failed to convince buyers. The biggest factor in buyers backing down was the refusal of co-founders Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo, and Samuel Reed to relinquish their majority stakes and control of the company. Despite the legal issues in 2020, the founders’ weight in management and the company’s continuous bleeding were seen as major risks for potential investors.

BitMEX’s Market Share and Sector Transformation

Shaping the industry by inventing perpetual swap contracts in 2016, BitMEX lost its market share in this once-leading field to competitors like Binance, Bybit, and Hyperliquid. While merger and acquisition activities across the sector reached a volume of $11.8 billion in 2026, BitMEX’s inability to find a buyer in this vibrant market drew attention. The company’s shrinking business volume fell far short of meeting the revenue multiples expected by growth-oriented investors.

New Lawsuits and User Risks

Now entering the closing process, the exchange is facing a new lawsuit accusing it of withholding user collateral and insider trading. According to the allegations, the platform is designed to transfer customer collateral to an insurance fund. This situation highlights once again the difficulties of founder-focused companies in the crypto world during the institutionalization process.

This situation serves as an important lesson regarding the sustainability of founder-focused management models in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
