UK Parliament Questions Major Banks on Crypto: The Letter That Caused a Stir

UK parliamentarians, in an official letter sent to the country’s giant banks, have sharply questioned account opening barriers and transaction restrictions targeting cryptocurrency companies.

The UK All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Crypto and Digital Assets has taken a critical step toward the giants of the financial world. The “Dear CEO” letter, sent with the signatures of Labour MP Gurinder Singh Josan and Conservative Lord Ed Vaizey, brought the exclusionary stance of banks toward the crypto sector to the forefront.

Recipients of the letter include some of the UK’s largest financial institutions, such as HSBC, NatWest, Nationwide, Santander UK, and Starling Bank. Parliamentarians state that the difficulties licensed crypto firms face in opening bank accounts and the restrictions placed on their transactions threaten the future of the sector. This situation is viewed as the UK reflection of the systematic debanking process in the US known as “Operation Chokepoint 2.0.”

The UK’s Crypto Vision and the Banking Barrier

The APPG describes the issue of access to banking services as the biggest obstacle to the UK’s goal of becoming a global cryptocurrency hub. The letter emphasizes that these restrictions undermine the growth of licensed firms and negatively impact potential investors’ decisions regarding the UK. This objection, rising from the grand corridors of Parliament, includes a warning that the banks’ stance could cause the country’s new crypto regime to fail.

The UK Parliament has launched an official inquiry to resolve this banking bottleneck for crypto businesses. Parliamentarians, expecting concrete answers as to why banks are maintaining such a rigid stance, argue that the doors of the financial system must be opened to legal firms. This development is considered one of the most concrete steps taken to resolve the contradiction between regulations and banking practices.
