Radical Decision After the BIP-110 Crisis in Bitcoin: Renowned Developer Luke Dashjr Officially Removed from His Role

Luke Dashjr, one of the key developers of the Bitcoin network, has been officially removed from his position as a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) editor following the failure of the controversial BIP-110 fork attempt.

Long-standing technical and governance debates within the Bitcoin community have resulted in a radical decision. Luke Dashjr, one of the network’s most well-known figures who played a critical role in Bitcoin Core development processes, has been removed from his position as a BIP editor. This move comes immediately after the collapse of the BIP-110 initiative, led by Dashjr, which aimed to restrict non-financial data on the network but failed to gain sufficient support among miners.

The removal motion, presented by developer Mark Erhardt, alleges that Dashjr abused his editorial powers. Accusations include Dashjr irregularly assigning a number to the BIP-110 proposal without adequate community discussion and quickly adding updates to the code repository without following necessary protocols. Additionally, Erhardt noted that Dashjr remained passive in operational processes, contributing to less than 1 percent of editor comments made since April 2024.

The BIP-110 Crisis and Its Consequences in Bitcoin Governance

The BIP-110 fork supported by Dashjr received only 2.6 percent support from miners, falling far short of the required 55 percent threshold. As a result of this failure, the forked chain stalled after just two blocks, while the main Bitcoin network continued its normal operations. Dashjr dismissed the allegations against him, describing his removal as an “abuse of power.”

Following these developments, Dashjr announced that he is taking a leave of absence from his roles as president and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at the mining pool Ocean. The renowned developer stated that he will shift his focus entirely to supporting Bitcoin and open-source projects during this period. This incident has once again highlighted the polarization within the Bitcoin community and the importance of strict rules in the network’s governance processes.
