Digital Gold Signal in Bitcoin: Correlation with Gold Jumps from -0.9 to +0.7

The Bitcoin-gold correlation has risen from nearly -0.9 at the beginning of 2026 to approximately +0.7, bringing the “digital gold” narrative back to the forefront.

According to CryptoQuant data, the 90-day Pearson correlation between Bitcoin and gold rose from nearly -0.9 at the start of the year to approximately +0.7. This metric indicates that the returns of the two assets over the last 90 days are now moving more in the same direction. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju described this shift as Bitcoin returning to “digital gold era levels.”

Month-to-date returns for Bitcoin, Nasdaq, and gold revealed that the asset does not fit into a single identity. During some periods, Bitcoin acted as a liquidity-sensitive risk asset like the Nasdaq, while in others, it moved with a scarcity theme like gold. However, Bitcoin’s volatility remained higher compared to both assets.

Bitcoin-Gold Correlation Does Not Prove Safe Haven Status

This shift indicates that Bitcoin is beginning to be priced as a scarce, non-sovereign asset and a hedge against currency debasement, fiscal repression, and geopolitical uncertainty. Furthermore, spot ETFs make it easier for institutions to hold Bitcoin and gold within similar portfolio frameworks. However, a positive correlation alone does not imply a bullish trend; Bitcoin and gold can rise together just as they can fall together.

Moreover, the 90-day metric can jump as older, inverse data points drop out of the calculation window. Therefore, it cannot yet be said with certainty that Bitcoin has definitively transformed into a safe haven. For the signal to be confirmed, the positive correlation must persist across 30, 60, and 90-day returns, spot ETF demand must continue, and Bitcoin must react similarly to gold regarding real yields, the dollar, and inflation data. The current picture points to the return of the digital gold narrative but does not yet show full institutionalization.
