Zcash Surges Past $800: What Does $4.5 Billion in Futures Trading Volume Reveal?

Zcash (ZEC) has surged past $800 for the first time since 2018, supported by futures trading volume and Grayscale’s ETF move; however, leveraged positions have increased the risk of a sharp reversal.

According to data reported by CoinDesk, ZEC climbed as high as $851 on Saturday, surpassing its January 2018 peak of approximately $800. The price moved between $589 and $851 within 24 hours, experiencing a 45% fluctuation.

Derivative trades played a prominent role in the rally. On Friday, futures trading volume reached $4.55 billion, while volume in the spot market, where direct buying and selling occurs, remained at $553 million. Thus, futures trading volume reached approximately eight times the spot volume. Open interest, which represents the total number of outstanding contracts in the market, stood at $1.35 billion. Leverage allows investors to open large positions with smaller collateral. When the price reverses direction, forced liquidations can accelerate the decline.

One of the developments fueling expectations of institutional interest was Grayscale’s fourth amendment filing on August 18 to convert the Zcash Trust into a spot ETF that would trade on NYSE Arca under the ticker ZCSH and hold ZEC directly. The application is under SEC review and has not yet been approved. Meanwhile, DCG International Investments is conducting non-binding discussions to purchase approximately 200,000 ZEC through the Zcash Trust. Therefore, the transaction is not considered a completed purchase.

Zcash’s 21 million supply cap and halving schedule, similar to Bitcoin, reinforce the “next Bitcoin” narrative. However, high derivative volume indicates that risks could escalate if the rally reverses. The sharp sell-off of ZEC in June following the Orchard vulnerability, which protects private transactions, served as a prior example of this volatility. With a market capitalization of $13.87 billion, ZEC ranks 12th overall and first among privacy-focused tokens.
