Lost Bitcoins Found After 15 Years: Value Reaches $4.5 Million

A British investor who purchased approximately $2,000 worth of Bitcoin in 2011 and lost access has recovered his assets through digital traces and old bank records; the reported current value of the Bitcoins has reached approximately $4.5 million.

The investor, a UK resident identified by the pseudonym Chris, purchased his Bitcoins in December 2011 via BritCoin. The exchange, which later became Intersango, halted operations in late 2012 and went completely offline by 2014. During this period, Chris gave up hope on his investment, believing he had lost access to his wallet.

Having invested approximately £1,500 (about $2,000) at the time, Chris watched as Bitcoin prices soared while he remained unable to access his funds. According to CoinDesk, the assets—once thought lost—were identified through cryptocurrency tracing efforts and old documents proving ownership. Today, these Bitcoins are reported to be worth approximately $4.5 million. This figure represents the current value of the recovered assets, not cash proceeds from a sale.

Lost Bitcoins Recovered Using Old Bank Records

CEL Solicitors and its sister organization, The Crypto Tracing Experts, played a role in the process. Using software to analyze wallet movements, the team tracked assets linked to BritCoin and Intersango users. Bank records dating back nearly 15 years were also used to prove Chris’s purchase.

Chris stated that he plans to hold onto a portion of the recovered Bitcoin. He noted that the assets could help his family purchase a larger home and reduce their debts.

The law firm announced that other former Intersango users who can prove their ownership through bank documents and purchase records may also benefit from a similar recovery process. However, this possibility depends on the submission of documentation for each individual user.
