AEON Launches AI Card-Powered Payment System for Autonomous Commerce

AEON, the settlement layer developed for the AI economy, AEON has launched Agentic Checkout, which allows AI agents to autonomously search for products, create carts, and make payments on e-commerce platforms like Shopify and Amazon. Supported by the AEON AI Card, Agentic Checkout provides agents with controlled spending authorizations to convert user intent into completed purchases.

Working natively with Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), Agentic Checkout enables users to communicate with an AI agent via a chat interface. When a user describes the product they are looking for, the agent can research products that meet the requirements and create a shopping cart.

Once a product is selected, the user can approve the purchase with the Visa or Mastercard-supported AEON AI Card. This allows the agent to complete the entire process—from product discovery to cart creation and payment—without exposing the user’s primary payment information or treasury wallet. A request given in natural language thus transforms into a completed purchase transaction.

AI Card: Controlled Spending Power for AI Agents

At the center of this experience is the AEON AI Card, designed to grant financial autonomy to AI agents while keeping spending under defined controls.

The infrastructure supports single-use agent cards and predefined budget limits. Thus, spending authorization can be restricted to specific tasks or transactions. Supported by crypto-based authorization and connected to the existing Visa payment infrastructure, the AI Card bridges the gap between on-chain assets and everyday commerce.

This structure enables agents to spend on behalf of users without directly accessing their primary wallets or traditional credit cards. This takes us one step closer to an agent-based commerce model where AI not only assists users in decision-making processes but also safely executes these decisions in the real economy.

From Agentic Checkout to a Larger Commerce Ecosystem

Agentic Checkout was designed to provide AI agents access to an open commerce ecosystem rather than a limited list of selected merchants. Through Shopify, agents can search among more than one billion products across categories such as clothing, home, beauty, electronics, and books in over 3 million stores operating in more than 175 countries.

Shopify is one of the first environments where AEON’s Agentic Checkout capability is being showcased. However, the infrastructure is designed to expand into different e-commerce ecosystems and support both physical and digital products. Amazon and Travala are planned to be the next platforms, bringing mass retail and travel inventory into the same agent interface.

The infrastructure also includes necessary security measures for real-world use. Full card numbers and security codes never enter conversation logs or model context. Ambiguous payment statuses are verified before retrying to prevent silent double charges.

As more commerce platforms open up to the use of AI agents, the secure authorization and settlement of these transactions will become increasingly important. AEON Agentic Checkout and AI Card provide the financial execution layer that ensures agents act within defined spending limits. AEON is developing the infrastructure that will allow agents to securely transact, make payments, and settle in both digital and physical economies.

A Settlement Layer for the AI Economy

Agentic Checkout and AI Card constitute two interconnected components of AEON’s agent-based payment infrastructure. While Agentic Checkout enables agents to execute commercial transactions, AI Card provides controlled financial authorization for payment. Together, the two products combine agent intent, payment authorization, payment execution, and settlement into a single flow.

AI agents are becoming increasingly capable of searching, reasoning, coordinating tasks, and making decisions on behalf of users. The next step is to ensure these decisions translate into secure and verifiable economic transactions. AEON aims to build this infrastructure by bringing together agent identity, payment authorization, payment execution, and settlement into a unified framework for the AI economy. Thus, it is aimed for AI agents to operate autonomously and securely within clearly defined financial boundaries in both digital and physical economies.
