DOT is the native asset of the Polkadot ecosystem associated with network participation and governance. Polkadot aims to allow different blockchain applications to operate using shared infrastructure and cross-network communication tools. As the ecosystem evolves over time, it is inaccurate to consider old parachain auction narratives as a summary of all current usage. What does shared infrastructure provide?
The Polkadot approach aims to distribute an application’s entire workload across different execution environments and chains rather than squeezing everything into a single chain. Shared security allows connected structures to benefit from a specific validation infrastructure. Cross-network messaging can be used not only for token transfers but also for carrying transaction instructions across different systems.
This relationship does not mean all connected applications share the same economic risk. An application’s contract may have a bug, the token’s manager may have different authorities, or assets coming from a bridge may rely on another issuer. Polkadot infrastructure and the application’s own rules are separate layers. For the user, it is important to know which asset is held on which chain.
DOT’s staking function
DOT can be used in staking to participate in network security. Validators and the participants supporting them play a role in the network’s consensus mechanism. Direct participation, participation through pools, and centralized platform products may offer different paths. The required amount, commission, exit period, and slashing risk should be examined based on the chosen method.
A staking balance is not always an immediately transferable balance. There may be a waiting period after an unstaking request. Using a liquid staking token may represent this wait through a different market instrument; however, it adds contract and liquidity risk. Comparing yield rates solely with other coins may overlook these operational differences.
Governance and changing network rules
In Polkadot’s governance processes, DOT holders can exercise voting power or delegate through supported paths. Decisions can relate to network parameters, treasury usage, and development processes. The existence of voting power does not mean everyone has equal influence; the amount, lock-up period, and participation conditions can affect the outcome.
The approval of a proposal and the completion of technical implementation are different stages. When evaluating changes to supply or staking conditions, check the status of the proposal and its enforcement separately. Do not assume a fixed rate written in an old document is valid indefinitely. Coretime and network capacity
In Polkadot, coretime is a concept related to the allocation of computing capacity that applications can use. This approach aims to acquire network resources based on different needs. Current capacity products are not the same as the long-term slot allocation narratives in the old model. A project being on Polkadot does not mean DOT usage occurs in the same way at every stage.
The important question for the user is which asset the application pays its fees with and which chain the account resides on. While DOT has a central function in the ecosystem, it does not mean that all other tokens can be used interchangeably with DOT. In cross-network transfers, how the target chain recognizes the asset and the return path should also be checked.
Transfer and price tracking
Address representations and the chains where accounts are located can be confusing in the Polkadot ecosystem. Even if different address formats associated with the same key are seen, the exact network instructions of the service being sent to are essential. An exchange may only support a specific deposit path. Choosing the wrong network does not become safe just because the wallet accepts the address.

Market capitalization is calculated using the circulating supply; staking yield is a separate metric. Track the change in TL or dollar value separately from the increase in token count.
