As an investigation continues into recovery phrases being stolen through components secretly implanted in hardware wallets, Ledger has unveiled a new device called Atom, which it says can detect physical tampering even when powered off.
Announced at the Op3n event in Paris, Atom separates everyday Android apps from the secure environment where crypto transactions are approved. According to The Block, Ledger says the new device will block the type of screen-reader implant identified in the incident linked to the CryptoBilis seller.
In that incident, it was reported that unauthorized hardware added to devices could capture the recovery phrases displayed on screen during setup and transmit them over a mobile network. These phrases are among the critical pieces of information that allow users to regain access to their crypto wallets.
Protection works even when the device is powered off
The system, which Ledger calls Core Protection, will detect attempts to remove the screen or casing and drill into the protected area. The sensors will continue to receive power from a separate battery when the device is powered off. The back cover is also paired with the device, so it cannot be directly replaced with the cover from another Atom.
The company says these measures will block the screen-reader implants seen in the latest incident. The investigation into how unauthorized hardware was installed in devices linked to CryptoBilis is ongoing. Atom is planned to be sold exclusively through Ledger’s own website.
Android apps and transaction approval are kept separate
Atom will switch between a standard mode, where everyday apps run, and Secure Mode, where transactions are reviewed and signed. A separate chip will prevent the Android environment from interfering with the secure signing area.
According to Ledger, even if a malicious Android app can send a transaction request, it will not be able to alter the transaction details shown to the user in secure mode. This will allow users to see the transaction’s actual contents before approving it. The camera and microphone will automatically turn off in this mode, and a physical switch will cut power to both.
Solana integration and delivery timeline
Solana Mobile’s Seeker app will combine its wallet and decentralized app store into a single app on Atom. Transactions will still be approved in the device’s secure mode.
Ledger also plans to integrate its Agent Intent system with OpenClaw, allowing users to review transactions proposed by AI agents without sharing their private keys with those agents. Users will be able to require approval for every transaction or allow transactions below a set amount.
The limited Founder’s Edition of Atom is priced at $849; a fully refundable $100 deposit is required to reserve one. The regular order price after launch will be $899. Deliveries are expected to begin in summer 2027, subject to obtaining the required certification.
