Major Crypto Exchange Responds to Hack Claims: Customer Information Leaked at Another Company

Coinbase denied hack claims, saying some customer contact information was exposed in a breach at third-party analytics provider Amplitude and that customer funds are safe.

According to a Coinbase Support statement reported by CoinDesk, the incident occurred at Amplitude, a service provider used by the exchange, not in Coinbase’s own systems. The breach affected a limited amount of contact information belonging to Coinbase customers, as well as data related to Amplitude’s other customers.

Exchange is emailing affected customers

Coinbase said it had detected no unauthorized access to its own infrastructure. The company said it was notifying affected customers by email in accordance with its legal obligations and assured them that their funds were safe.

However, the number of customers affected and the specific contact information exposed have not been disclosed in detail. As a result, the scope of the leak for individual customers remains unclear.

Why does contact information pose a risk?

Data such as an email address or phone number can make it easier for attackers to contact users while impersonating an organization’s support team. These phishing and social engineering attempts aim to direct users to fake links or persuade them to share their account information.

The incident shows that customer information can be exposed through external service providers even when an exchange’s own systems have not been breached. While Coinbase continues to assure customers that their funds are safe, the full scope of the leaked contact information remains among the issues awaiting clarification.
