A Former Bitcoin Mining Giant Is Exiting as Revenue in Its New Business Jumps 60%

Core Scientific plans to completely end its own Bitcoin mining in the final quarter of 2026 and focus solely on high-performance computing infrastructure services starting in 2027.

According to the third-quarter earnings call reported by Wu Blockchain, Core Scientific is accelerating its exit from mining. The number of active mining machines on the network operated by the company, once described as the world’s largest Bitcoin miner, has fallen by about 50% compared with the end of 2025.

The company’s timeline calls for its own Bitcoin production to end completely in the final quarter of the year. In 2027, it aims to focus its operations on providing data center space and infrastructure to high-performance computing (HPC) customers.

Revenue in the new business reaches $215 million in a quarter

Core Scientific’s third-quarter colocation revenue reached $215 million. Revenue from this business, which provides data center space and infrastructure for customers’ computing equipment, rose by about 60% from the previous quarter.

The earnings call also reported that the EBITDA margin rose to 57%. The company’s growing data center business, together with its plan to exit mining, is shaping its new operational focus.

A transformation that goes beyond additional investment

Crypto miners have recently been making their energy and facility capacity available to computing customers. Riot’s deal with Anthropic was one example of this trend.

Core Scientific’s announced plan goes beyond adding a new revenue stream alongside its existing business: ending its own Bitcoin mining entirely goes hand in hand with the goal of operating solely as an HPC colocation provider in 2027.

Not investment advice.
