Dash in brief

Dash is a proof-of-work payment network that uses masternodes for fast confirmations and treasury governance; its native asset is DASH.

Dash is an open blockchain network designed for everyday payments. Its native asset is DASH. The network launched in 2014 as XCoin, was briefly known as Darkcoin and in 2015 took the name Dash, from “digital cash”. Dash is derived from Bitcoin’s codebase, but alongside miners it uses a second network layer made of masternodes.

What is a masternode?

Masternodes are always-on servers that lock a set amount of DASH as collateral. A regular masternode requires 1,000 DASH; an Evonode, which also runs Dash Platform services, requires 4,000 DASH. Masternodes handle fast confirmations, transaction locking and governance voting, and receive a share of the block reward in return.

As long as the collateral stays locked, the masternode keeps its vote and reward share. Moving the collateral removes it from the list. Running a masternode requires server maintenance and technical knowledge; some platforms offer it as a hosted service, which introduces custody risk.

InstantSend and ChainLocks

InstantSend lets groups of masternodes lock a transaction within seconds, so it can be treated as reliable before a block confirmation. ChainLocks lock miner-produced blocks with masternode signatures. This makes rewriting the chain, and any double-spending attempt based on it, considerably harder.

On privacy, Dash’s CoinJoin feature mixes several users’ transactions to make coin histories harder to trace. It is optional and offers weaker privacy than Monero or Zcash’s shielded transactions.

Treasury and governance

Part of every Dash block reward goes to a treasury. Community members submit budget proposals for development, marketing or integrations, and masternodes vote on them. Proposals with enough votes are funded from the treasury. This made Dash one of the first networks to fund its own development on chain.

Mining and supply

Dash mining relies on proof of work with the X11 algorithm. The block reward falls by about 7.1% each year, and total supply is expected to settle at roughly 18.9 million DASH. The reward is split between miners, masternodes and the treasury.

How to read the market data

The price, volume and market cap on this page show the overall DASH market. Liquidity on the specific DASH/USDT or DASH/TRY pair you trade may differ from this overall picture. DASH locked as masternode collateral can affect the supply actually available on the market. You can compare other coins on the markets page.
