What is FOMO?
FOMO refers to the tendency to make hasty decisions due to the fear of missing out on a potential opportunity.
What is FOMO?
FOMO stands for Fear of Missing Out; it describes the anxiety of missing a potential opportunity. In crypto, it often manifests as an urge to buy hastily when prices rise sharply, driven by the thought: “Everyone else is profiting while I’m being left behind.” The emotion may be real, but it is not evidence that the price will continue to climb.
Screenshots of high gains shared on social media can amplify this effect. People often showcase their successful trades; they may not share their losses or the risks they took. The examples shown do not represent the results of all investors.
How Does FOMO Affect Decisions?
Consider a token that has risen 40 percent in a single day. If you buy without knowing the project, simply out of fear that it will rise even higher, the basis of the decision becomes price movement rather than utility or valuation. It becomes possible to approve a transaction without even checking transaction fees, liquidity, or the token’s contract address.
Haste can also cause the position size to grow in an unplanned way. While initially considering a small amount, using debt or leverage under the narrative of “this opportunity won’t come again” creates a different level of risk. FOMO is not just about choosing the wrong asset; it can also lead to trading the wrong size in an asset that seems right.
Questions to Recognize the Emotion
Would you still be researching this asset if the price hadn’t risen today? Can you explain why you are buying it, other than the price increase? Are the transaction amount and the potential for loss within the limits you previously considered? These questions make the source of the decision visible.
A habit of pausing briefly, calculating total costs, and checking official information can reduce haste. However, no method completely prevents loss. The goal is not to know the future with certainty, but to avoid making others’ excitement the sole justification for your own decision.
