Massive Cleanup in Bitcoin: 45% of Risky Bloat Wiped Out

The decline in the amount of open interest in the Bitcoin market from $45 billion to $20.4 billion indicates that the system is purging excessive leverage rather than investors panic selling.

Recent activity in the cryptocurrency markets has brought about a significant decline in open interest data, which represents the total value of outstanding futures contracts. This process, moving in parallel with fluctuations in Bitcoin (BTC) prices, is interpreted as the gradual shedding of risky burdens on the market.

According to CryptoQuant data, the amount of open interest, which climbed to levels as high as $45 billion in July 2025, has now declined to approximately $20.4 billion. This situation indicates that investors either closed their futures positions voluntarily or experienced liquidation—meaning forced closures—due to price movements. In particular, the record liquidations on October 10, as the Bitcoin price dropped from the $122,574 level to the $105,000 range, significantly reduced the bloat in the market.

Healthy Cleanup Process in the Bitcoin Market

This leverage flush in the market is characterized by experts as an “orderly retreat” because it occurred at nearly the same rate as the price decline. Unlike sudden panic-driven crashes, the synchronized decline in price and open interest indicates that the market has reached a more balanced structure. Data reveals that more than 45 percent of leverage has been removed from the system since the peak.

However, this reduction in the amount of open interest does not necessarily mean the price has bottomed out. In previous cycles, this data has been seen to drop as low as $10 billion. The current $20.4 billion level serves as a reminder that there may still be some room for further decline while the Bitcoin price hovers around $59,400. Nevertheless, purging the market of excessively risky positions is seen as a critical step for long-term stability.
