A New Era in Crypto from Coinbase: AI Bots Now Make Their Own Payments
Coinbase Business is expanding cryptocurrency use cases by announcing its new system that enables AI bots to make payments as independent economic actors.
Coinbase Business, the institutional arm of the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, has launched an innovative payment stack on its first anniversary that allows businesses to accept payments from artificial intelligence (AI) agents. With this move, the company is opening the door to a new economic model where AI is not just an assistant tool, but also an active consumer.
Siddharth Coelho-Prabhu, Head of Coinbase Business, describes this initiative as one of the company’s “highest conviction bets.” The new system is powered by Coinbase Payments and utilizes the x402 open internet payment standard, a language through which machines can easily communicate with each other. Thanks to this technology, AI bots can purchase goods and services in the digital world without the need for human intervention.
x402 Standards in the AI Economy
According to data shared by Coinbase, 53% of web traffic to the documentation for Base, the company’s own blockchain, has originated from AI agents since June. This statistic proves how dominant bots have become in the digital ecosystem. At this stage, early adopters of the system consist of businesses offering digital infrastructure services such as cloud storage, domain name purchases, and Open Router credits.
AI agents can be funded through defined wallets and can execute payments with dollar-pegged assets like USDC within seconds. Coinbase has designed this process with a “machine-friendly language” to ensure transactions are completed seamlessly.
$1 Billion Transaction Volume in One Year
Having just completed its first year, Coinbase Business has quickly reached 5,000 customers. The total payment and transaction volume processed through the platform has exceeded the $1 billion mark. The company predicts that in this new era where AI agents are at the center of commerce, mainstream commerce—referred to as “normie”—will also soon explode with this technology.
Thanks to the developed software kits, businesses can easily integrate AI payment features into their existing systems. This situation opens the doors to a future where cryptocurrencies are not just investment vehicles but the fundamental fuel for autonomous systems.
