Capital Dries Up in the Crypto World: Number of Active Investors Hits 6-Year Low

As institutional interest in the cryptocurrency market wanes, venture capital (VC) participation has dropped to its lowest level since the end of 2020.

Venture capital investments, which are the lifeblood of projects in the crypto world, have recently entered a period of significant stagnation. According to data shared by the crypto data platform CryptoRank, the number of active investors in the market has retreated to a level not seen since the end of 2020, highlighting the slowdown in capital flow within the sector.

As of July 2026, the number of unique venture capital firms participating in crypto funding rounds was recorded at just 150. This figure stands out as the lowest monthly data recorded since the level of 126 investors seen in November 2020. During the sector’s peak in March 2022, a total of 1,177 active investors were present in the market. The current situation proves just how massive a hit investor appetite has taken compared to the peak period.

A Period of Selectivity in Crypto Investments

Experts state that this sharp decline indicates crypto investments are now concentrated among a narrower and more specific group of funds. Contrary to their aggressive stance in the past, investors are now being much more meticulous and selective in project selection. This situation makes the fundraising process more challenging, especially for early-stage startups and projects in the pre-sale phase.

This market contraction is interpreted not only as a numerical decrease but also as a harbinger of a strategic shift. The withdrawal of institutional investors or their adoption of a wait-and-see policy indicates that the market is experiencing growing pains. In the coming period, market uncertainties are expected to decrease and projects with more solid foundations are expected to come to the fore for capital flow to accelerate again.
