Critical Decision from Zcash Affecting $1.7 Billion in Funds: That Pool Has Been Completely Sealed

Zcash has activated a “turnstile” mechanism allowing users to migrate their assets to a new and more secure pool while closing a critical vulnerability affecting $1.7 billion in funds with the Ironwood upgrade.

The Zcash network initiated a significant technical transformation with the Ironwood upgrade occurring at block 3,428,143. This update paved the way for a transition to a new pool system starting from scratch by sealing the Orchard pool, which holds the vast majority of the network’s shielded funds. Approximately 3.66 million Zcash (ZEC), valued at around $1.7 billion, will now be manually migrated to the new system by their owners.

Developers identified a bug that has existed since May 2022, which could potentially allow malicious actors to generate counterfeit ZEC. Although there is no evidence that this vulnerability has been exploited, the old pool has been closed to new entries to maintain network security.

Turnstile Mechanism for Security

In the new system, a turnstile mechanism is implemented to ensure the secure transfer of funds. This rule ensures that the total amount exiting a pool does not exceed the verified amount deposited into that pool. Much like a physical turnstile that prevents more people from leaving a building than entered, this system prevents potential counterfeit assets from leaking into the new pool.

Ironwood arrived with high-level security measures such as quantum resistance, which provides protection against future technologies, and formal verification, which mathematically proves the software operates without error. So far, approximately 1,500 ZEC has been successfully migrated to the new pool.

What Awaits ZEC Holders?

For users, this migration process is entirely voluntary, and each investor must manually move their own assets. Until the assets are migrated, the majority of Zcash’s shielded supply will remain in a locked pool where no one can make new additions.

Prior to the update, the ZEC price was trading around $463, losing 8 percent on a daily basis. Despite experiencing a 15 percent decline on a weekly basis, the cryptocurrency has still provided nearly a 10-fold return to its investors on an annual basis.
