$114 Million Heist on Coldcard: Wall Street Analysts Predict Surge in ETF and Coinbase Interest
A security vulnerability in Coldcard hardware wallets is warning investors about the risks of self-custody while potentially driving demand for spot Bitcoin ETFs and institutional custody services.
A critical security vulnerability identified in the popular hardware wallet manufacturer Coldcard has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency world. Following an attack that has been ongoing since July 30 and originated from a firmware bug, approximately 1,816 Bitcoin (BTC), valued at $114 million, has been stolen from over 5,200 addresses. Wall Street analysts predict that in the wake of this financial devastation, investors may move toward more secure and regulated institutional structures rather than managing their own assets.
Investment bank Cantor noted that this security breach could reinforce interest in publicly traded crypto companies tied to institutional adoption. Analysts highlight that users avoiding the risks of self-custody may turn to platforms offering managed custody services, such as Coinbase (COIN), Robinhood (HOOD), BitGo, Bullish, eToro, and Gemini. This shift is expected to have a positive impact on the respective companies’ stock prices and customer inflows.
Institutional Custody Services and ETF Demand on the Rise
A report by FRNT Financial emphasized that this incident highlights the ultimate dilemma of self-custody. While investors want to hold their own private keys, they must still trust hardware and software manufacturers during the process. Drawing parallels to the “Milk Sad” incident of 2023, which resulted in losses of nearly $900,000, this event makes spot Bitcoin ETF products a much more attractive alternative for those looking to avoid operational risks.
Analysts suggest that such large-scale attacks will not entirely eliminate self-custody culture; rather, they will force wallet manufacturers to elevate their security standards. However, in the short term, a rapid increase in demand for regulated and insured institutional custody solutions is anticipated from the general public seeking to secure their digital assets. This situation could trigger a new era in the cryptocurrency market where institutional assurance takes precedence over individual control.
