Central Bank of Brazil Issues Radical Crypto Ruling: 24-Hour Mandatory Hold on Transfers Over $10,000

The Central Bank of Brazil has announced the implementation of a mandatory 24-hour waiting period for transfers exceeding $10,000 in an effort to prevent cryptocurrency fraud.

Brazil is taking a radical step to make its digital asset ecosystem safer and protect users by launching new oversight mechanisms for cryptocurrency transfers. According to the new ruling published by the country’s Central Bank, high-value transfers initiated by users after funding their accounts will no longer be approved instantly. This regulation aims to bring the technological infrastructure into full alignment with the legal framework.

Under the new rules, companies will be required to wait at least 24 hours for transfers exceeding $10,000, particularly those sent to personal wallets or international crypto platforms. If a transaction is flagged as risky, platforms may suspend the transfer even if the amount is below $10,000. During this period, service providers will meticulously examine the customer’s risk profile, the identity of the counterparty involved, and the recipient’s location.

Crypto Security Enhances in Brazil

The rule, set to take effect on January 1, 2027, covers both traditional assets like Bitcoin (BTC) and stablecoins. The Central Bank defines this waiting period not as a permanent freeze on assets, but as a precautionary measure to assess potential fraud risks. At the end of the 24-hour period, companies must either immediately approve or reject the transaction. Firms that fail to comply could face severe penalties, such as extended waiting periods or transaction restrictions.

Brazil ranks fifth globally in crypto adoption, making it one of the most active markets in Latin America. With approximately $318.8 billion worth of crypto inflows into the country between July 2024 and June 2025, the oversight of this massive volume has become essential. Part of an ongoing payment systems security reform since 2021, the new regulation aims to place the country’s digital financial infrastructure on more solid ground.
