Crypto Bill Crisis in the U.S. Senate: Donald Trump’s $1.4 Billion Profit Stalls Negotiations

The U.S. Senate has significantly reduced the likelihood of crypto legislation passing this year by postponing the vote on the CLARITY Act due to ethical concerns and technical disagreements.

Senate Majority Leader John announced that there will be no vote on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act) before the August recess. This decision, following months of negotiations, has caused significant disappointment in the industry, casting the future of the legislative process into uncertainty.

The primary reason for the deadlock in negotiations was former President Donald Trump‘s commercial activities in the cryptocurrency sector. The revelation that Trump earned a $1.4 billion profit from this field created an ethical crisis among Democrats. Many sources state that this high profit figure acted as a “death blow” to the legislative talks and stalled the process.

Stablecoin Yields and New Hurdles

Beyond ethical issues, new concerns regarding yield and reward mechanisms in the stablecoin ecosystem are also complicating the process. Ongoing debates in the halls of the U.S. Capitol are tied up in various issues such as law enforcement powers and agricultural regulations. This complex framework increased the risk of the bill being rejected even if a vote were held.

When Congress reconvenes in September, a radical change in the ethical language will determine the fate of the bill. However, as the election cycle approaches, the likelihood of the process dragging into the next Congressional session is increasing.

Political Determination and an Uncertain Future

Senators Angela Alsobrook and Cynthia Lummis stated that work will continue and they will not give up. While Lummis argues for the establishment of clear rules and consumer protection on U.S. soil, Alsobrook emphasized that they will continue working toward a fair deal.

Industry participants remain skeptical about the bill’s chances of passing this year due to the upcoming elections and political polarization. A new common ground with the White House is expected to be sought to convince the Democrats.
