USDT is a stablecoin issued by Tether that aims to maintain its value close to the U.S. dollar. It is used in crypto markets for pricing, transfers, and holding dollar-based value between trades. The fact that it targets 1 dollar does not mean it will trade at exactly 1 dollar on every platform at all times, nor does it have the same protections as a bank deposit.
What is the value of USDT based on?
Tether states that it backs tokens in circulation with reserves and publishes reserve information. The composition of the reserve, the report date, and the scope of the independent assurance work can be tracked through these documents. The term “reserve-backed” does not mean that the equivalent of every token is waiting only as cash in a separate bank account. Asset types and liabilities are detailed within the report.
Giving tokens directly to the issuer to receive dollars is different from selling USDT on an exchange. Direct redemption may involve identity verification, eligible customer conditions, minimum amounts, and fees. Small investors mostly buy and sell based on the liquidity of the market they are trading in. Therefore, the reserve report and the immediate cash conversion possibility in your personal account are not the same information.
The same symbol on multiple networks
USDT can be used on different blockchain networks. For a transfer, both the sender and the receiver must support the same network. A network mismatch, such as sending an Ethereum version to a TRON deposit address, does not become safe just because the symbol is the same. It is necessary to check the networks supported by the service and the official token contract; the list of supported networks may change over time.
Network fees may be paid with an asset separate from USDT. Examples include the requirement for ETH on the Ethereum mainnet and TRX on TRON, depending on the resource status. An exchange’s withdrawal fee does not necessarily have to be identical to the actual cost of the network. When sending 100 USDT, check the platform’s net amount line to see how many USDT will reach the recipient.
Why are USD and USDT not the same price?
USD refers to the bank and cash dollar unit, while USDT refers to the issuer’s token. The BTC/USDT price and the BTC/USD price may track closely; however, they can diverge due to different trading pairs and liquidity conditions. A deviation of USDT from its dollar target can also widen this difference. In a price comparison, the counter currency must be read correctly.
Hypothetically, if 1 USDT is 0.99 dollars and the dollar exchange rate is 40 TL, the simple conversion would be 39.60 TL. Automatically accepting 1 USDT as 40 TL ignores the deviation. In the real market, the bid-ask spread and commission are also added. Even if USDT stays close to its dollar target, your TL equivalent changes when USD/TRY changes; the name stablecoin does not mean a fixed value in terms of TL.
Issuer powers and usage risks
USDT is not an issuer-less asset like Bitcoin. Supported contracts may include permissions such as address restriction and freezing; these are linked to the relevant contract and legal conditions. From the user’s perspective, issuer, reserve, bank access, and market liquidity risks are important. The widespread use of a token does not prove that these risks have been eliminated.
If you deposit USDT into a DeFi pool, new layers such as the pool contract and debt market are added to the token’s risks. If you use its bridged representation on another network, you may also be dependent on the bridge. The statement “I am holding USDT” alone does not explain the entire custody structure. Where the asset is located and within which contract it resides changes the outcome.
What should be tracked on the price screen?
Deviations from the dollar target, trading volume, and differences between markets are meaningful for usage. An increase or decrease in supply may be related to the issuance and redemption processes; it does not indicate by itself that new investment is entering the entire crypto market. Official reserve documents and network announcements should be followed separately from the market price. The price on this page is a general indicator; it is not the net quote for the conversion you will perform.
