BNB in brief

BNB is a cryptocurrency created by Binance in 2017 that now serves as the native coin of the BNB Chain ecosystem. It pays for transaction fees and staking, and gives fee discounts on Binance.

Safety note: download wallets and apps only from the official site, and beware of unsolicited "support" accounts and fake airdrop sites.

BNB is a cryptocurrency launched by the Binance exchange in 2017 that now serves as the native coin of the BNB Chain ecosystem. It started life as an Ethereum token sold through an ICO, mainly offering discounts on Binance trading fees. It later moved to its own blockchain and today pays for transactions on BNB Smart Chain and helps secure the network through staking.

How does BNB Chain work?

The main network of BNB Chain is BNB Smart Chain (BSC), which launched in September 2020. BSC is compatible with the EVM, so smart contracts written for Ethereum and wallets like MetaMask work on it with little or no change. Addresses also start with 0x, just as on Ethereum.

The network runs on a consensus model called Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA): a limited set of validators is chosen according to the amount of BNB delegated to them, and they take turns producing blocks. This delivers fast blocks and low fees, at the cost of being less decentralised than Bitcoin or Ethereum. The ecosystem also includes opBNB, a Layer 2 network, and BNB Greenfield for data storage.

Low fees helped BNB Chain grow rapidly during the 2021 boom in DeFi and yield farming, when apps such as PancakeSwap and Venus took off. In later years the network also shipped upgrades that shortened block times and sped up finality.

What is BNB used for?

  • Network fees: gas fees on BSC and opBNB are paid in BNB.
  • Staking: holders delegate BNB to validators to help secure the chain and earn rewards.
  • Binance perks: it unlocks trading fee discounts and access to token distributions such as Launchpool.
  • DeFi: it is a base asset on BSC-based exchanges like PancakeSwap and on lending apps.

BNB supply and the burn mechanism

BNB launched with a total supply of 200 million. Binance aims to bring that down to 100 million over time using two token burning methods. The first is the quarterly Auto-Burn, where the amount destroyed is set by a formula based on the BNB price and the number of blocks produced. The second is real-time burning introduced by BEP-95, which automatically destroys part of the gas fees paid on BSC in every block. No new BNB is mined; validator rewards come from transaction fees.

Key milestones

  • 2017: BNB was issued as an ERC-20 token in Binance’s ICO.
  • 2019–2020: Binance Chain launched, followed by the smart-contract-capable Binance Smart Chain, and BNB migrated to its own network.
  • 2022: the ecosystem was rebranded as BNB Chain. In October 2022, a flaw in a cross-chain bridge contract let an attacker mint new BNB, and validators briefly halted the chain.
  • 2024: the legacy Beacon Chain was shut down and staking and governance moved to BSC (BC Fusion).

What are the risks of BNB?

BNB’s value is closely tied to Binance’s business and reputation. In November 2023, Binance reached a multibillion-dollar settlement with US authorities over anti-money-laundering and sanctions violations, and regulatory action of this kind can hit BNB directly. The small validator set draws criticism that the network is centralised. And because fees on BSC are so low, it attracts a large number of copycat tokens and rug pulls, so always verify a token’s contract address before trading.

How to read BNB market data

Because of the burns, BNB’s circulating supply falls over time, which keeps the gap between market cap and fully diluted value narrower than for many other coins. Following the quarterly burn announcements helps you understand the supply trend. Volume reflects how actively BNB is used both on exchanges and on BSC itself.
