What does rug pull mean?
A rug pull is a term describing when those managing a crypto project withdraw users’ money or assets from the project in a way that causes financial harm. One of the most well-known examples is developers withdrawing assets from a liquidity pool, making it extremely difficult to sell the token. However, not every project collapse is a rug pull; intentional behavior must be distinguished from failure.
A drop in a token’s price alone does not prove fraud. Contract permissions, transfers made, and the team’s statements must be examined together. The word “rug” is sometimes used on social media for every sharp decline; this broad usage can obscure the true nature of the incident.
What happens when liquidity is withdrawn?
Imagine a pool containing a new token and ETH. Users need the ETH in the pool to sell the token back. If the person controlling the majority of the pool withdraws the liquidity, the sale price can crash due to the tiny remaining reserve. Even if the number of tokens in a wallet doesn’t change, their sellable value can drop significantly.
In other examples, permissions to mint unlimited tokens, restrict sales, or apply unexpected fees can be abused. Therefore, not only the size of the pool but also the control of the contract is important.
Which signs are significant?
Who holds the liquidity, the lock duration, admin permissions, and the distribution of large token holders are concrete control points. The phrase “liquidity locked” does not eliminate all risks; there may be other pools or different contract permissions. An independent audit also cannot be guaranteed to prevent future malicious intent.
Anonymous support accounts promising high returns or guaranteed listings also require caution. Unreviewable code, changeable sales conditions, and permissions concentrated in a single hand should be evaluated together. A professional-looking promotional page is no substitute for this information.
