Data of 680 Revolut Customers Compromised via Fake Government Requests: Ransom Demanded

According to the Financial Times, the sensitive data of 680 Revolut customers has been exposed through fake information requests.

According to the incident reported by the Financial Times, cybercriminals sent fake information requests to Revolut using a legitimate government email account. As a result of these requests, sensitive records belonging to 680 customers fell into the hands of the attackers.

The exposed information included passport details, bank account numbers, home addresses, and identity verification images. It was stated that the records also contained information regarding customers’ Bitcoin activities. Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès was reported to be among those affected.

Cybercriminals are demanding a ransom in exchange for not publishing the data they obtained.

Following the incident, the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) launched an investigation. Revolut stated that it has blocked the email account used and informed regulators as well as the affected customers.
