Binance Faces Billions in Potential New Penalties as U.S. Revisits Previous Settlement

The U.S. Department of Justice is examining whether Binance violated its 2023 settlement as part of an investigation into Iran sanctions. A potential violation could lead to renewed prosecution of the exchange and billions of dollars in additional penalties.

According to Wu Blockchain, which cited a Bloomberg report, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating whether Binance complied with its obligations under the previous settlement. The review is being conducted as part of an investigation into possible violations of sanctions against Iran.

Federal prosecutors have moved to seize $61 million allegedly linked to Iranian oil sales and laundered through Binance. No charges have been brought against Binance or its employees in the current investigation.

Why does the previous settlement matter again for Binance?

The key issue for the exchange is whether the 2023 settlement was violated. If a violation is found, Binance could face renewed criminal prosecution, and additional fines worth billions of dollars could be on the table.

Binance said it continues to strengthen its compliance controls and cooperate with law enforcement. This means the investigation is focused not only on the $61 million prosecutors are seeking to seize, but also on whether the exchange complied with its previous agreement.
