Two Conditions for a Lasting Bitcoin Rally: When Will Wintermute Turn Cautious?

Wintermute tied a lasting Bitcoin recovery to ETF flows turning positive and long-term U.S. Treasury yields stabilizing, and outlined two thresholds that would make it more cautious.

According to an assessment reported by Wu Blockchain, market maker Wintermute says crypto is receiving less support from capital flows. The firm notes that while stocks are finding support from earnings expectations, outflows are dominating the crypto market.

Last week, Bitcoin fell 3.2%, while Ethereum fell 7%. Figures shared by Wintermute showed net outflows of $679 million from U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs and $542 million from spot Ethereum ETFs. Bitcoin funds recorded their largest weekly outflow since late June.

What needs to change for the recovery to continue?

According to Wintermute, for the rally to become sustainable, long-term U.S. Treasury yields need to stabilize and net inflows into spot ETFs need to resume. The firm believes Bitcoin could remain exposed to sharp fluctuations and downside risks until these conditions are met.

The firm also says investors should be cautious about rallies in altcoins it considers lower quality.

The $82,500 Bitcoin and 5.64% Treasury yield thresholds

While maintaining a positive long-term outlook, Wintermute also listed two conditions that could prompt it to adopt a more cautious stance:

  • The yield on the U.S. 30-year Treasury bond rising above 5.64%.
  • Bitcoin repeatedly failing in attempts to rise above $82,500.

These levels are risk thresholds the firm monitors in its assessment; $82,500 is not a current price, but one of the benchmarks it uses to assess Bitcoin’s movement.
