IOTA in brief

IOTA is a blockchain project that began with the Internet of Things and data sharing in mind and moved to a Move-based proof-of-stake network in 2025.

Safety note: download wallets and apps only from the official site, and beware of unsolicited "support" accounts and fake airdrop sites.

IOTA is an open distributed ledger project developed for the Internet of Things, data sharing and digital identity. Its native asset is IOTA, which some platforms still list under its old name, MIOTA. The project started in 2015 and is backed by the Germany-based IOTA Foundation.

From the Tangle to IOTA Rebased

For years IOTA used a structure called the Tangle, in which blocks form an interconnected web instead of a single chain. The design aimed at fee-free transactions. However, the network depended for a long time on a central “coordinator” node, which drew criticism over decentralisation.

The IOTA Rebased upgrade, activated in 2025, changed the network fundamentally. IOTA now runs a validator network secured by proof of stake and supports smart contracts written in the Move programming language. Transaction fees and staking rewards became part of the network with the switch.

How does IOTA staking work?

IOTA holders can stake by delegating coins to a validator. Validators secure the network and share rewards with delegators. Because staking rewards come from newly minted IOTA, the network has a fixed inflation component, and holders who do not stake may see their share diluted over time.

Delegated coins stay in the wallet, but the choice of validator matters: its commission and track record affect the rewards. Staking through an exchange follows the platform’s own reward rates and withdrawal terms.

Use cases

The IOTA Foundation positions the project for trade document digitisation, supply chain tracking and digital identity. IOTA technology has been used in several EU-backed pilot projects. Taking part in a pilot does not mean the IOTA coin is widely used in that field; real usage should be tracked through network data.

What to watch when transferring

The IOTA network has gone through several major upgrades and address formats have changed. Coins left in old wallets should be migrated following the official wallet’s instructions. When sending IOTA to an exchange, check which network and address format the platform supports; choosing the wrong network can lead to losses.

How to read the market data

The price, volume and market cap on this page show the overall IOTA market. Because the network’s design changed fundamentally in 2025, older price and supply data may not fully reflect today’s network. You can compare other coins on the markets page.
