Chainalysis reported that a person it said ran a task scam lost more than 60 Bitcoin worth about $4.8 million in a theft linked to Ledger wallets.
According to Chainalysis findings reported by Wu Blockchain, the person was one of the biggest victims of a recent theft. The funds, which were said to have been obtained through fraud, were held in three separate Ledger wallet addresses.
They were asked to deposit money to receive payment
The funds originated from a task scam in which users were offered payment in exchange for creating fake sales and reviews for real products. In this scheme, victims were told their accounts had a negative balance and were asked to deposit their own money to collect their earnings.
The person tracked by Chainalysis transferred Bitcoin from these activities to three separate addresses on September 22. However, distributing the funds among these addresses did not prevent the theft that followed.
Bitcoin from all three addresses was consolidated into one wallet
On October 9, thieves emptied each address in a single transaction. All of the assets, totaling more than 60 BTC, were sent to the same destination wallet.
The wallet that received the Bitcoin was flagged as being linked to stolen funds. Thus, assets worth about $4.8 million, said to have been obtained through fraudulent activities, became the target of a theft carried out by others.
