QCP Capital said concerns over debt used to finance AI infrastructure are spreading from stocks to crypto markets and increasing selling pressure on Bitcoin.
A QCP report dated October 23, cited by Wu Blockchain, focused on the financing risks behind the market downturn. Investors are paying attention not only to the scale of AI investments, but also to how they will be financed, how existing debt will be repaid, and the cost of new financing.
AI Company’s Shares Fall 10%
The report highlighted CoreWeave, a provider of AI infrastructure. Yields on some of the company’s bonds rose to about 15%, while its shares fell by about 10% on October 22. QCP linked this to concerns about high capital expenditures, debt repayments, and future financing costs.
Rising bond yields indicate that investors are demanding higher returns to hold the company’s debt. That is where the risk flagged by QCP lies: As the money needed to expand AI infrastructure becomes more expensive, the sustainability of investment plans and debt burdens is coming under greater scrutiny.
Why Is Bitcoin Affected by This Pressure?
According to QCP, Bitcoin continues to behave like a traditional risk asset in this environment, falling alongside U.S. stocks. As a result, concerns about AI companies’ financing are not limited to technology stocks; weakening investor appetite for risk is also affecting crypto assets.
Bond and oil prices are also adding to market pressure. The yield on France’s 10-year government bonds exceeded 5.1%, while the spread over German bonds of the same maturity widened to about 170 basis points, or 1.7 percentage points. Tensions in the Middle East pushed oil prices to a five-month high.
Two different trends also emerged in Fed expectations: The likelihood of an interest rate hike in October fell to nearly zero, while confidence in a rate cut in December weakened. In QCP’s assessment, Bitcoin is being affected by this risk environment, shaped by companies’ borrowing costs, oil, and interest rate expectations.
