As oil’s price squeeze raises the possibility of a sharp move, two scenarios are emerging for Bitcoin, separating mounting inflationary pressure from expectations of relief.
CoinDesk’s analysis says the price of WTI, the key benchmark for the U.S. oil market, has been moving in an increasingly narrow range following wide swings in March and April. Lower highs and higher lows have created a tightening pattern around $102.
Naomi Blohm, senior market advisor at Total Farm Marketing, notes that major moves can follow these kinds of consolidations. In this pattern, known in technical analysis as a triangle or pennant, the key question is which direction prices will break out of the narrowing range.
Why could Bitcoin come under pressure if oil breaks above $105.50?
The analysis places the upside threshold at around $105.50. If that level is breached, the $117–$119 range, where the March and April peaks occurred, could come back into focus.
A sustained rise in oil prices could stoke inflation concerns through higher energy costs. Rising bond yields and expectations that interest rates will remain elevated for longer could also tighten financial conditions, weakening demand for risk assets such as Bitcoin and technology stocks.
The source notes that oil is up about 80 percent since the start of the year. As a result, a potential further increase could add pressure to already elevated inflation sensitivity.
The relationship between Bitcoin and oil has reversed
In its calculation using TradingView data, CoinDesk puts Bitcoin’s 30-day correlation with the Nasdaq 100 at 0.64. This positive relationship indicates that Bitcoin and technology stocks tended to move in the same direction over the period examined.
The 30-day correlation with oil, meanwhile, has fallen from 0.18 before the Iran war began to -0.47 after the war. In other words, Bitcoin and oil have shown a stronger tendency to move in opposite directions over the measured period. The analysis suggests that Bitcoin could also come under pressure if rising oil prices and bond yields weigh on stocks.
Why is the area around $93 being watched?
In the downside scenario, the boundary around $93 stands out. An oil breakout in that direction could help ease inflation concerns and create more favorable conditions for Bitcoin and stocks.
The direction of the breakout is not yet clear. For Bitcoin, the focus is not only on what level oil reaches, but also on how that move changes inflation and interest rate expectations.
