5 Days Left for Beryl Upgrade on Base Network: New Token Standard Coming

The Base network is preparing to launch the new B20 token standard and shorter withdrawal times with the Beryl upgrade scheduled for June 25.

Base, the Coinbase-backed Ethereum Layer-2 network, has begun the countdown for its second major upgrade, Beryl, which will enhance network performance and user experience. Successfully deployed on the testnet, this update will go live on the mainnet on June 25, bringing a fresh breath to the ecosystem. The network’s corporate identity and technological infrastructure, also highlighted in the shared visual, are becoming more user-friendly with this new era.

The most striking feature of the Beryl upgrade is the introduction of a native token standard called B20. Unlike existing smart contract-based tokens, B20 offers a structure integrated directly into the network’s node software—the main computer program that runs the system. This allows for more efficient issuance of stablecoins and other digital assets. Additionally, the time for users to withdraw assets from Base back to the Ethereum network is being reduced from seven days to five, increasing transaction speed.

B20 Standard and Fast Transactions on the Base Network

The new B20 standard provides developers with a flexible toolkit, bringing regulatory compliance features such as freezing and supply limits. With future updates, users will be able to pay network transaction fees directly with their B20 tokens instead of Ethereum (ETH). This innovation aims to take the network’s ease of use to the next level and simplify complex transaction processes.

On the technical side, the transition to the Reth V2 version is increasing data storage efficiency. This expands the block space on the network while providing more capacity for developers. The Base team plans to continue its growth by incorporating smart account features into the protocol with the Cobalt upgrade scheduled for September. Throughout this process, the network’s speed and cost-effectiveness will remain the primary reasons for user preference.
