Altcoin Team Pledges to Permanently Lock 210 Million Tokens in Major Supply Overhaul

The Aptos Foundation has announced a new plan that includes a commitment to permanently lock and stake 210 million APT, nearly halve staking rewards, and cap the total supply.

According to Wu Blockchain, the package prepared for Aptos (APT) aims to reduce new token issuance and increase token burns. The 210 million APT the foundation has committed to permanently locking represents approximately 18% of the current supply.

Under the foundation’s plan, these tokens will be staked, and the rewards generated will be used to fund operations. The goal is to rely on staking income to sustain activities instead of selling tokens.

Staking rewards may fall as transaction fees rise

Among the proposed changes is a reduction in the annual staking reward rate from 5.19% to 2.6%. The move, which amounts to a cut of roughly half, aims to reduce the amount of new APT issued as rewards.

The package also calls for capping the total supply at 2.1 billion APT and increasing gas fees paid to transact on the network tenfold. By reducing emissions and increasing burns, the plan aims to put APT on a path toward a declining net supply over time.

Unlocks expected to fall 60%

Aptos’s first four-year token unlock cycle ends in October 2026. At the same time, the annualized amount of tokens unlocked is expected to decline by 60%.

The commitment to permanently lock tokens, lower staking rewards, and slower unlocks are the package’s main supply-side measures. It is important to note that these steps work through different mechanisms: Permanently locked tokens will continue to be staked, while burns will remove tokens from the supply.

Buyback also under consideration

Future ecosystem grants are planned to be tied to specific performance targets. The foundation is also considering a token buyback program funded by cash reserves and future revenue.

The buyback has not yet been implemented; the staking rate, transaction fees, and supply cap are also among the announced proposals.
